So why don’t more restaurants implement mentorship programs? Mentorship programs give both, the mentor and the mentee, opportunities for growth, and the business as a whole benefits when its staff is involved in ongoing education. Need more convincing? Here are 4 reasons restaurants need mentorship programs.</span></p> <p><a href="https://i2.wp.com/blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png"><img data-attachment-id="1433" data-permalink="https://industry-blog.industry.co/4-reasons-restaurants-need-mentorship-programs/restaurant-mentorship-programs-1200x630/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/industry-blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png?fit=1200%2C630&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1200,630" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Restaurant Mentorship Programs 1200&#215;630" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/industry-blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png?fit=300%2C158&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/industry-blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png?fit=660%2C347&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1433" src="https://i2.wp.com/blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630-1024x538.png?resize=660%2C347" alt="4 Reasons Why Restaurants Need Mentorship Programs" width="660" height="347" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/industry-blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png?resize=1024%2C538&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/industry-blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png?resize=300%2C158&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/industry-blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png?resize=768%2C403&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/industry-blog.industry.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Restaurant-Mentorship-Programs-1200x630.png?resize=1200%2C630&amp;ssl=1 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p> <h2>1. Improve retention rates</h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to the National Restaurant Association, turnover rates in the restaurant industry averaged 72.1% in 2015. Although there are </span><a href="./5-reasons-youre-losing-restaurant-staff/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">various reasons you’re losing staff</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, two of the primary reasons include poor communication and lack of acknowledgment. A mentorship program gives both parties the space for open communication and ongoing recognition. A productive mentor relationship will make both individuals feel more connected to the business and they will be less likely to quickly move on to the next job.</span></p> <h2>2. Provide opportunities for ongoing education.</h2> <p>This might be the number one reason restaurants should implement mentorship programs. Entry level employees often come into a restaurant hungry for work and ready to improve. With a mentor, junior level employees are given the opportunity to learn on the job and expand their skillset. This can be done through trainings, advanced certifications, conferences, and more. With more opportunities to grow, employees may also be less likely to leave.</p> <h2>3. Create a supportive company culture.</h2> <p>Mentor relationships offer the individual support that most restaurants, especially large ones, usually can’t provide on their own. The industry is extremely fast paced and giving individual attention to each employee can be near impossible on most days. In a mentorship program, both mentor and mentee can benefit from supporting each other.</p> <h2>4. Mentors develop leadership skills.</h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mentorship programs are not just beneficial for the mentees. We know, restaurant life is demanding and adding teaching to the mix requires even more energy. However, teaching can be extremely gratifying. Not only does it increase job satisfaction but it helps to develop leadership skills – which is particularly beneficial if that veteran employee wants to reach a managerial position. </span></p> <blockquote><p>True leaders don&#8217;t create more followers, they create more leaders.</p></blockquote> <h2 style="text-align: center;">Tips for Creating a Mentorship Program</h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are many things that go into </span><a href="https://www.trainingindustry.com/workforce-development/articles/how-to-build-a-successful-mentoring-program.aspx"><span style="font-weight: 400;">developing a successful mentorship program</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, but here are a few questions to get you started.</span></p> <ul> <li><b>Determine your objectives + goals. </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">What are you hoping to get out of a new mentorship program? In 6 months, where would a successful mentorship program have gotten your restaurant? Your employees?</span></li> <li><b>Begin to create the structure. </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">How are the mentor relationships going to be determined? How will you communicate the objectives and structure of the program to your staff?  How will you measure success? </span></li> </ul> <hr /> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Do you have any other suggestions for creating a productive mentorship program?
